Name:

Troon South Beach

Beach description:

Troon is around 45 minutes from Glasgow, and just 15 minutes from Europe’s biggest wind farm. That has to be a good sign! It’s actually 2 beaches separated by a marina: This one, South Beach, and North (Barassie) Beach. Either beach at Troon are great spot for beginners but South Beach provides better protection from the waves, providing flatter water for learning or tricks. South Beach will work on anything from S around to NNW. SW winds tend to bring the best waves.

Beach Access

There’s free parking at both Troon beaches. At South Beach parking is next to the Golf Course.

Code of Conduct

Both North and South beaches are approved for kite surfing. The public is made aware of this with signage.

Wind Direction

South, South-West, West, North-West

Water Type

Troon is a great spot for beginners as the waves never get that big, there’s loads of space and plenty of kite surfers around to help with launching / landing. Troon South can be ridden at all tide states. It just affects the amount of room for landing / launching. Waves tend to be biggest at high water, steepest at low water. The reef on South Beach provides shelter from the waves at lower tide, providing flat water shredding and easy riding for beginners.

Hazards

Rocks on South Beach. There is a reef running 150m out, adjacent to South Beach. This is OK on anything but low tide.
