Name:

South Bay Scarborough

Beach description:

Scarborough has 2 main beaches suitable for kitesurfing: North Bay and South Bay. Both are really busy tourist beaches. There are lots of other little spots in the area that surfers use but they’re not suitable for kitesurfing unless you’re extremely brave! South Bay features smaller, tamer waves that North Bay. It’s a sheltered spot, and a useful option if it’s too windy at other local venues. Scarborough's South Bay will works on E around to SE. It can be a temperamental venue though. You might find it's windy all the way up the East Coast, but sheltered here. This can make it a useful spot if it's really nuking everywhere else and you need some shelter.

Beach Access

Scarborough is a well sign-posted location. Parking is adjacent to both beaches right the way along. Payment is via meters and it can get very busy in summer and school holidays.

Code of Conduct

There is a wheels ban at both North and South Bay, so buggying and landboarding are a definite no no!

Wind Direction

East, South-East

Water Type

Kitesurfing at high tide is just about doable, but you won\'t have much room for launching and landing. Not recommended in the busy months. The waves at South Bay tend to be a little tamer than those at North Bay, and often have some nice glassy, flat water in between them. This makes it a nice venue for wave riders or freestylers.

Hazards

Tourists. Promenade railings. Rip tides and strong currents.
