Name:
Old Hunstanton
Beach description:
Like its neighbour, New Hunstanton, Old Hunstanton is situated in The Wash. The various sand bars mean that at various states of tide it features excellent flat water, making it ideal for beginners or freestylers. Old Hunstanton will work on anything from SW round to N.
Beach Access
As you exit Hunstanton on the A149, with the pitch and putt to your left, take the left hand exit on the sharp bend. PARKING: For Old Hunstanton, either park in the cliff-top car park or the grass car park next to the Le Strange Hotel (cost £3). Please don't park in the Le Strange Hotel car park.
Code of Conduct
Avoid setting up and packing down near the main entrance to the beach (near the lifeboat launch). It gets really busy.
Wind Direction
North, South-West, West, North-West
Water Type
Conditions at Old Hunstanton are mostly chop, with some flat areas at different states of tide. It's more of a freestyle than a wave venue. Old Hunstanton will work on any tide state. It can be a long walk to the water at low tide, and there's only a thin strip of beach at high tide (especially on a high, spring tide), but it's all perfectly doable.
Hazards
Stay well clear of the large cliffs when the tide is high as the updrafts could loft you. There are some small wooden stakes that appear around mid tide. Ask a local for their position.
