Beach description:

Greatstone beach near New Romney in Kent offers a huge beach with a well established kitesurfing scene. The beach is shallow in shore, which means at low tide you’re looking at a long walk to reach the water (around 1/2 a mile). It offers large area for kitesurfing, featuring small chop and flat-water riding near the shore, and on a rising / falling tide. The swell is strongest at high tide. Greatstone Beach works on NNE around to SE. The beach is suitable for beginners because of its shallow nature. A good spot to launch is opposite the Romney Tavern, but getting parked can be tricky (see getting there and parking below).

Beach Access

There's free on and off street parking near the Romney Tavern (marked on the map below) but this gets very crowded. Postcode for sat nav purposes is TN28 8RP. Alternatively there are two pay and display car parks adjacent to the beach in Greatstone. One is in Coast Drive, opposite to Clark Road (sat nav postcode TN28 8NS) and the second is The Parade opposite to Dunes Road (sat nav postcode TN28 8ST).

Greatstone has a bit of everything: Flat water, chop and some waves. Something for everyone. Greatstone Beach will work at all tide states, but at high tide beware of the the proximity of the electric cables over the road.

Hazards

The swell can get pretty big when you head out, best to stick nearer the beach unless you’re really confident. Electric cables near the coastal road, care when launching at high tide! Other beach users; horse riders, dog walkers, swimmers, families enjoying the beach, lug worm collectors etc. Fishing nets in the water usually marked by plastic containers or buoys. Mud - There can be muddy stretches.
