Name:
Cayton Bay
Beach description:
Cayton Bay is just south of the seaside town of Scarborough. If you live locally or you’re on holiday in this area, Cayton is one of the few beaches in the area that will work on a wind with some west in it (see below). It’s reef makes it an excellent wave venue, on the right day. Cayton is pretty sheltered. You can stand on the cliff top, expecting to need a 7m kite, when you get to the bottom of the (very steep) path, from the carpark to the beach, you'll find you actually need a 12m! That path is a killer after a good session (especially if you've ended up having to run back up for bigger kites at the beginning of your session.
Beach Access
Cayton Bay is just off the A165 south of Scarborough. Use the map below for directions. Once you see the surf shack with a flag on it , head for that. You're there! Parking costs just £2 for the full day.

Water Type
The tide often comes right up to the steps, so avoid kitesurfing an hour or so either side of high tide. Cayton is a popular surf venue. It's a reef break (most local beaches have a shore break), which results in cleaner sets. On the right day, Cayton can be an excellent wave venue. The cleaner waves, with longer periods make them fun for freestyle riders too, the flat spots providing a good run up to boost off the waves.
Hazards
Surfers. Cayton Bay is a very popular surf spot and can get very busy if the surf is on, so mind you don't crash into any surfers or bodyboarders. A reef. Looking out to sea from the steps to the beach, there's a reef at your 2 o'clock. Watch out for this as the tide level changes. A savage rip. Cayton bay has some very strong currents - beware! Sharp stones at the Southerly end of the beach - hurts your feet if you have to get out at this end! The walk back up the path to the car park after a big session can be a killer!
