Allonby Beach

Beach description:

The beach at Allonby Bay is long and made up of sand/shingle, with great views of the mountains in Southern Scotland and the Lake District fells across the Solway Firth, with the Isle of Man being visible on a good day. With shallow waters, an open bay and the beach stretching for around 5 miles it is a popular spot for kitesurfing. Allonby Beach will work on anything from SW around to N.

Beach Access

For access to the beach leave Maryport on the A596 then take a left turn onto the B5300 which leads to Allonby. Parking is available on the beach front.

Water Type

On really windy days you'll find a bit of chop, but that's as large as the waves get at Allonby, making it the ideal freestyle venue. Allonby can be ridden at any state of tide. It has a large tidal range, so at low tide expect a very long walk to the water. It's best on a falling tide a couple of hours after high tide.

Hazards

Allonby beach can have strong currents. This can make it unsuitable for beginners. There are some rocks that get barely hidden at high tide. If you arrive at high tide, ask one of the locals to point them out to you.
